My work consists of abstractions that reflect my own internal experiences. The process of cutting the fabric apart and piecing it back together in order to make it a whole has a resemblance to my own life. Feeling a constant struggle, disconnection, and anxiety about reality is implied in the quilts. The fragmented pieces relate to how I feel about putting myself back together on a daily basis. The feeling of ever being whole seems to be just out of reach. The clarity of the finished puzzle is what I strive for as I go through life.
Most of the fabric was made by the low-water immersion technique, which is the process of dyeing fabric in a "crowded-pot". Another surface technique used is digital printing on fabric using pigment inks. The organic quality of the hand-dyed fabric is a great complement to the more structured appearance of the digital printing. Together they create visual interest that neither process could achieve on its own. The connections that they both make visually play a strong role in the work.
